Cadenza has been through many nights. Some of them she spent in company. Some of them she spent alone. Yet most of them she does not even remember ever having. For all those nights, she has known that nights have their own characteristics. There are silent nights and loud nights. There are fiery nights and there are drowsy nights. There are tranquil nights and dreadful nights, dark nights and bright nights, and heroic nights and a lover’s nights. There are also nights that leave no impression after, while some nights stay forever with one’s soul, unable to go on or to be left behind.
Of all those nights she has been through, she can safely say that no nights soothe one’s soul more than the nights she has spent at Kokiri Village.
The simple and tranquil village, located in the center of a forest yet also in the outskirts of it, feels like it is made from a sweet dream dreamed by the forest itself. From her place on the highest hill overlooking the village, Cadenza cannot help but feels dreamy, as if she herself is participating in the forest’s dream. The night sky is clear, dark blue in color, and nowhere has she seen the stars as cheerful as the stars in this sky. Beneath her she can see the shadows of the small houses of Kokiris, the minute yellow lights flickering from their windows indicating that an innocent soul is sleeping inside. From those shadows branched figures of leafs and branches, for The Kokiri’s houses are made from tree-trunks, hollowed inside. The resulting leaf canopy looks like a loving mother’s hands, blanketing her precious children from the gentle breeze of the night.
Which is perhaps not very far from the actual reality.
Cadenza smiles when a light wind playfully spreads her hair, bringing with it the scent of the forest flowers. If she had her hands free now she would gladly play her harp and offer her lullaby to the forest’s children, joining them in their lovely dreams throughout the night. But she cannot.
She is now giving a finishing touch to a delicate looking stick she holds in her hands, carving its transparent body with her darkness-laced nails. She completes a hole in that stick at just the right amount she wants and lifts it up, inspecting its greenish hue under the starlight. Just beside where she sits, another stick rests on the dark green grass. This one slightly longer and has bluish hue instead.
Feeling satisfied, she holds the greenish stick close to her mouth and blows gently into a hole at its end.
A soft crystal tune spreads from the stick and hung in the air, dispersing into the night breeze when she stops blowing.
They are flutes, Cadenza’s gift to the Kokiri children.

After the fateful encounter with that Deku Baba and the black Sheikah, Flora, the Kokiri girl, offered Cadenza to go home with her into the village, and promised that later she would bring her to meet the Deku Tree. The Kokiri boy named Leon also liked the idea, and offered to tag along, but not very deep. It turned out that they had not lived very far apart from each other, but because of Leon's circumstances they had always missed seeing each other during all these years.
Unfortunately, when they arrived it was said that The Great Deku Tree had not been feeling very well recently, and thus no visits were allowed. Which, Cadenza thinks now, maybe has some connection with the black-clothed Sheikah.
And so, Flora had kindly offered Cadenza to stay at her home for a while until they can go see The Great Deku Tree, and Cadenza happily accepted. She then spent the next one or two days with both Flora and Leon as they kindly showed her the many great sights of their beloved village. But it was not for long.
Apparently, after he had been healed The Deku Tree had somehow asked Flora to investigate a strange sound coming from the Lost Woods, and Flora gladly accepted. Although Cadenza was more than intrigued at the strange musical notes, Flora had firmly denied Cadenza’s offer to accompany her to the Woods. Since Cadenza was a guest, Flora said it would not be polite to burden a guest with the forest’s matters.
So, Cadenza was left at home with Melvin, the friendly Cuccoo, while Flora was busy preparing and then going for her Quest. Cadenza would occasionally see Leon in his isolated house on a small hill outside the village, but he always seemed to be busy, either he was adventuring, seeking items, or training on his swordplay. Cadenza could have used this opportunity to visit The Great Deku Tree herself, but she felt that she needed to keep her promise to Flora.
So Cadenza decided to spend her nights on creating a gift instead, that would be fitting for the Kokiri’s hospitality.
Cadenza had actually planned this from the very beginning. She had spent her entire first night in Kokiri Village prowling the woods for the material that she had in mind. She thought of amber, the clear stones made from fossilized resin that are plenty in this old forest. Nearing the dawn, she had found what she wanted, a clear amber with greenish hue and another with bluish hue, both transparent and sparkling prettily. It seems that the magical trees of this forest has more resin colors than just yellow.
It would take a few more nights while she refined the beautiful crystal into the shape of a flute, using her darkness-laced nails and occasionally tools she stealthily borrowed from the Kokiris’ houses. She measured the length and marked the holes, and then drilled the holes one at a time, checking for the right tune and the right pitch. Thankfully, she did most of the process right, and finally, in this night, she has finished it.
Looking at the two sparkling flutes in her hand, Cadenza feels a slight sense of pride, although the flutes are, truthfully, quite crude. Of course the flutes bear nothing of the masterful workmanship of Gorons or the delicate touch of Fairies, but for the most part she considers the flutes lovely pieces of instrument, and a Songstress is a master of her art. They are not a Singing Instrument like her Bronze Harp though. They are only simple flutes. To make one like her Bronze Harp would exceed even Cadenza’s most daring dreams, but to play normal songs and notes, she feels the flutes would be more than adequate.
After all, are not all melodies a magic in itself?
Now, all that is left is a slight refinement.
The flutes, however Cadenza tried to hide it, bear the designs of a Twili. And of a Songstress, the single one of its kind. While it would matter little, Cadenza feels she has to give them something that would feel more normal for the Kokiri Children.
As she is pondering what to do, a sparkling orb flies through the shadows of the village houses and goes inside one of the lit windows.
An idea suddenly appears in Cadenza’s mind.
Holding the two flutes one hand, she quickly carves some lines into the back sides of them with her nails. The resulting lines then are slowly formed into a cursive character, one for each flute.
The Language of the Fairies.
Cadenza knows only a little of the secret characters of the Fairies, and of those little she knows they are all ancient characters. But by carving a fairy character into the flutes and smoothen the edges a little, Cadenza has successfully made two amber flutes that are seemingly made by fairies. Only a fairy that is a Master of Instrument might be able to tell the trace of a Twili, and then again they might dismiss it as an unintended result during the manufacture.
Liking her idea, she again lifts both flutes and sees the sparkling stars above through their transparent bodies. The greenish one, for Flora, is shorter, and bears the character (via), which means “Hope”. The bluish one is around one quarter longer and bears the character (vis) which means “Destiny”. That one is for Leon. If Flora’s flute is held in front of Leon’s in such a way that the characters are superimposed on each other, they would seemingly form another character, (viole) meaning “Bonds”.
Satisfied at her little trick, Cadenza stands up, leaving a bent patch of grasses where she had sit for so many nights. Holding the two sparkling flute in her hands, she silently walks into the sleeping village, activating her shadow form on the way. Although she highly doubts that the Kokiri children would understand the ancient fairy character on their flutes, perhaps one day they would know, and when that time comes Cadenza hopes that they are both living happily and well.
Far better than Cadenza would be.
***
She sneaks first near Leon’s house on the hill and peers from the window. Leon is sleeping soundly, no doubt exhausted from his training. She slowly lowers the bluish flute into a table below the window with her hand, careful not to make any sound. She succeeds. The seemingly fairy-made flute is now glowing dimly under Leon’s window. He would no doubt regard it as a mysterious gift from a mysterious fairy, and Cadenza would leave him at that.
Silently wishing a sweet dream for Leon, she slowly approaches Flora’s house inside the village.
Flora’s house is not locked, since almost no Kokiri cared to ever lock them. But the lamp inside has somehow been lit.
Cadenza thinks for a moment. Has Melvin acquired the knowledge to lit lamps?
Inside, Cadenza finds Melvin has fallen asleep, still caged inside his cage.
And on the bed, sleeping with a smile on her face, is Flora Lasola, still wearing her adventure outfit. That must means that she had finished that quest in the Lost Woods safely, and then returned when Cadenza was out. She might be too tired to notice that Cadenza was not in the leaf woven basket near the door, where she had left her before.
But that is understandable. Cadenza is just glad that she has returned. It is also good then that Cadenza has finished the flute this night, it would make a perfect welcoming gift. It would also mean that they would go meet The Great Deku Tree tomorrow as Flora and Leon has promised, since it seems all matters have been resolved.
Like a shadow she is, Cadenza silently walks near Flora’s bed and gently puts the bluish flute on the far side of Flora’s pillow. She leaves no sound or traces of her Twili form, careful not to wake Flora up.
For a while, Cadenza feels an urge to write a letter that seemingly comes from The Great Deku Tree, explaining that the flute is a gift for Flora to have completed her quest and congratulating her. But she ultimately decides against it. It would be too risky.
On the matter of the flute then, she would leave it to Flora’s assumptions.
Then, something catches Cadenza's attention.
There, on a small table besides where Flora's head rests on her pillow, lies a perfect miniature of a bed, complete with a pillow and a blanket. It has been empty for all Cadenza could remember.
But now, there lies a small glowing fairy, mumbling softly in his sleep. "As...pen....No...."
Cadenza tilts her head. So this is Flora's fairy guardian. She has heard tales of Children of the Forest being paired with Spirits of Nature, but this is the first time she has seen Flora's fairy. Perhaps Flora's mission was more than just investigating a mysterious sound in the woods.
Cadenza silently whispers her praises to The Great Deku Tree.
As Cadenza steps away from Flora’s bed and is heading to the leaf-woven basket, she cancels her Shadowform. Suddenly, Melvin the Cuccoo opens his eyes.
It is the first time he has seen Cadenza’s Twili Form, and the fright in his eyes is understandable. Cadenza feels a little guilt of hiding her actual circumstance from this friend of hers. But ultimately, this is something Cadenza must do.
Looking straight at Melvin’s eyes, Cadenza puts a finger over her lips and shakes her head slightly, gesturing at the sleeping Flora.
Melvin, a miracle it is, seemingly understands, and closes both of his eyes. He soon drifts back to sleep.
One day, Cadenza has to give Melvin a gift too. But that would have to wait.
Assuming her Mouse Form back, she crawls back into the leaf-woven basket Flora has prepared for her, and snug herself under the small blanket on its surface. Cadenza does not really need sleep, but sleep is very nice she always try to do it in the night.
When the morning sun arrives, Flora would find Cadenza the purple mouse at exactly where she had left her, sleeping peacefully as if nothing has happened at all.
Cadenza: ProfileCharacter Tracker Plot Progression : Heart of a Child (Kokiri Forest), Conversations (Kokiri Forest), A New World (West Clock Town) Tags: LEON @flora Personal notes: Please tell me if there is anything I should change about this post :-) I think the timeline events are: Heart of A Child (Apollo's journey), Inside The Deku Tree (Apollo and Rath Jinqu's quest), Melody in the Forest (Rath still in the forest, The Deku tree has been healed), then this thread.
It had been a long, long day. Far past nightfall, the small Kokiri girl smiled at the small ball of light in her hands. The small fairy had fallen asleep whilst they were walking; Flora's home was on the opposite end of the Forest's entrance, and more so at the edge of the village. Carrying the small fairy boy, she was glad; she had been brave and asked him to come with her. And well, now she had a new friend to show Cadenza! The small fairy was cutely curled in her hands, and letting out a soft giggle, she nuzzled the ball. She missed her own fairy; where had they gone? This worried her immensely, as it was almost nerve wracking to the small Kokiri.
But she arrived home, softly entering and lighting a lap; lucky for her, the bed that her fairy lied in was still alright. Taking off her boots with one hand, and carrying the sleeping Rath with the other, she didn't even think to check on Cadenza; assuming the mouse was either asleep, or simply running somewhere as mouses do. The girl softly placed Rath on the fairy bed, and felt her body shiver anxiously. Tomorrow was probably when they'd go see the Deku Tree. The Kokiri child had somehow lain down; she didn't remember doing that. But she smiled at the soft glowing ball, and whispered to him something sweet. ''Goodnight Rath, and have really sweet dreams.'' she said gently, before her own eye lids shut, and sleep took her.
The soft sounds of Cadenza did not awaken the Kokiri; she was in deep slumber. However, Melvin, the ever springy Cuccoo, had awakened; and seeing a tall girl in the house, his eyes just widened. Who, what no; but there was something similar about that presence. His gaze moved to Flora when the figure shook it's head, and seeing his master sleeping peacefully with a flute, his gaze wandered back to the strange. With a ruffle, as he was inside of a nice comfy coop, not really a cage, he closed both eyes. But he was still awake, as he listened to the stranger disappear, and the noises of the familiar mouse, Cadenza, appear. His curiosity satisfied, he went to sleep, slumbering once more.
---
The morning came, and with it, Flora began to wake. Moving from her absolutely comfortable position, her hand stretched a bit; and tapped on something cold. As it started to roll, the girl grabbed onto it by instinct; and then when she pulled it closer, and woke up a bit more, she noticed it had a nice, soft feeling. The girl stirred, now sitting up, her long locks pretty much a mess. ''... Rha?'' she let out, as she yawned and stretched, before her hand came back down. A beautiful, greenish flute was in her hand; slowly releasing her grip on it, she looked more in depth at it. Her eyes sparkled softly, as she then smiled, before putting it back on her pillow. Her gaze around the house told her everyone was sleeping still.
So the Kokiri girl went into the kitchen and began to prepare breakfast, humming a small melody under her voice. She remembered the song of the forest, and the song of the poor soul they had met. Within a few moments, she had prepared a meal, making sure to leave some grain and other good stuff for Melvin, some foods she knew a mouse could eat, and thankfully she still had a supply of fairy oriented food, so Rath was set. And she herself had prepared something perfect, as her breath released softly from her body. This was going to be indeed a long day, as she moved to the other room once more.
Flora's house was in a tree trunk yes, but she had made sure to find a hollowed tree that was attached to another, smaller one; bringing the food out on the leaf woven plates, she set them around the table. And then gently, she opened the door to Melvin's coop, softly petting him awake. The cuccoo let out a cluck, and then fluttered towards the table, the sounds of brushing wings in the room. Seating itself, the cuccoo however, was patient; Flora had taught the small guy well. To wait for everyone before eating; and softly, she stroked Cadenza's soft fur. ''Cadenza.. it's time to wake up..'' she called softly. Petting the soft creature more, she waited until the mouse woke, and then went towards the last, and most recent guest.
Softly, she picked up the fairy, and nuzzled it, before softly calling his name. ''Rath.. rath.. wake up.. breakfast is ready..'' she whispered to the sleeping fairy. Today was going to be another long day, as she softly whispered to the fairy, until he would wake. After all, she would have to bring him to the table to eat, right?

Ooof~
Rath was pooped, the poor boy. It had been a rather eventful few days. Him and Aspen had succeeded in obtaining the stone, but at the cost of their friendship. It was a bond that meant the world to Rath. Aspen's satisfaction was the driving point of the poor fairy's existence. Without that, well not be melodramatic; but without her, he had no purpose. So he was lost in this fucking frightening shitstorm of a forest without friends or the one family member he managed to turn away. Kairi…what had he done? Rath singlehandedly threw away the only two people in the world that would always be there for him.
Well at least he was lucky to find Flora. The gentle Kokiri girl had taken him in after the events of their quest and Rath was grateful, especially in his distraught emotional state. It was nice that someone could still care about him, even an almost stranger. His fluffy fairy aura was nuzzled by the Kokiri woman. That was much appreciated, and Rath found it easier to snooze and dream peacefully with that gesture of comfort. "Goodnight Rath, and have really sweet dreams."
…and with that he could rest easy. Was he really so dependent on others that he needed other people to comfort him so he could act of basic life necessitates? Yes, yes he was. He couldn't deal with the loneliness, the mere presence of another figure was enough to soothe the events of the past few days. Still, he knew he'd wake up with some horrible feelings the next morning. Attempting to ignore the looming cloud of guilty and lonely feelings, Rath forced a smile and thought of how nice it was to be in someone's company again. He closed his eyes and went to sleep. The Next Morning~
Rath awoke in a tiny fairy bed. Now that he was free to turn into human-size whenever he wanted, he wanted to stretch out and walk amongst the big people for once without any fear of anyone finding out. He was still mildly conscious when Flora picked him up telling him to wake up, but dazed from other from everything that happened, Rath wasn't entirely sure what he was going on. "Aspen..?" he asked, slowly letting things come back to him.
Cadenza opened her glowing red eyes a split second before Flora’s fingers touches her fur. That is the state she has always been in her sleep, three quarter conscious and one quarter unconscious. But she would never tell Flora about it.
Stretching her legs, she fakes a very convincing yawn before smiling at Flora, who is petting her. “Good morning Flora Lasola. I see that you have returned.”
As Flora heads away from her leaf-woven bag, Cadenza looks first at her back. Her precious bronze ball is still there, securely tied to her back with a fine black satin that encircles her waist.
Cadenza sighs with relief. Another safe night.
As she makes her way to the table, where her plate has been put on the table, Cadenza hears another name spoken softly by Flora.
''Rath.. rath.. wake up.. breakfast is ready..'’
Cadenza glances at the fairy being awoken. It seems that his name is Rath, and he does not seem to be the happiest fairy in this woods. His eyes have a hollow look in it, even from Cadenza’s distance.
But that is not Cadenza’s care. She shrugs a little before continuing to the table.
She climbs at her chair and stops at the top, staring blankly at the wide gap between it and the table. It seems that somehow, this morning Flora has forgotten that Cadenza can never be able to bring her chair closer to the table. Usually, Flora would place Cadenza’s chair quite near to the table so she could jump to it and had her bronze bell rang as she landed, a small morning routine they have invented.
But this morning, the distance is too great.
Cadenza would have climbed down the chair and made her way through the table’s legs instead, if not for Melvin the Cuccoo. The white Cuccoo lets out a small cluck and flaps his wings, showing them off to Cadenza. His gaze rests exactly at the purple mouse's eyes.
Cadenza stares directly back at the boasting Cuccoo. All right then.
As Cadenza takes a few steps behind and prepares to jump, Melvin coos in perfect rhythm, as if counting down.
Cadenza cannot help but smiles a little. Perhaps she would grow to like this cuccoo in the future. Then she focuses her sight on her intended target, the table.
Cadenza’s legs spring and she dashes forward, rapidly nearing the edges of the chair. Her front claws grip the polished wood, her hind legs bend, her back arches, and then with a rapid release Cadenza the purple mouse leaps toward the table!
She has done it. Her small body flies toward the table, leaving the chair behind. But instead of stopping near a leaf-woven plate full of berries, as she has intended, she veers instead to the far left, closing near a leaf- woven plate intended for another guest. Her claws grate the table in panic, trying to stop her sliding momentum, but to no avail.
Amidst the tinkling of bell and Melvin the Cuccoo laughing clucks, the leaf-woven plate is knocked to the side of the table and flips, tumbling down under the table. Whatever that was on it before, it would be spread all over the floor right now.
Cadenza cannot believe what she has done. She must be the worst guest in the whole of Hyrule Historia.
“Fo-forgive me...I....”
Cadenza braces herself to face Flora’s anger, if that is what must happen then.
And she would need to apologize to her guardian fairy too.
Cadenza: ProfileCharacter Tracker Plot Progression : Heart of a Child (Kokiri Forest), Conversations (Kokiri Forest), A New World (West Clock Town) Tags: LEON @flora @rath Personal Notes: Welcoming Rath Jinqu with a food deprivation :-) I am sorry Flora, but in my opinion it would be okay for Leon to post also. As long as he set the place not in the same place. I do think it would be good for Leon's character development, rather than putting them all in a flashback when he arrives :-) But this is just my opinion.
The small fairy seemed to have a hard tim waking up. Stirring, and almost not waking up, eventually the small fairy let out a word. But it was someone's name, as Flora gave a soft, but sad smile. ''No, it isn't, I'm sorry. But you need to wake up Rath, I'm sorry for waking you.'' she said softly, nuzzling the fairy again, before letting out a soft hum, as if trying to wake him up. She was a bit distracted, needless to say, and she had forgotten about Cadenza's little.. predicament. And as such, even as she was busy trying to wake the fairy, the small Kokiri was totally oblivious to the almost train wreck like events that would happen to transpire behind her.
It all started with Melvin; seeing Cadenza's little predicament, the Cuccoo decided to apply a bit of pressure; after all, Cadenza might be Flora's friend, but he poorly appreciated secrets kept like this. A soft cluck to grab her attention, and a fluttering of wings, to show that he could hop to the other side if he thus wanted. If he had a mouth, not a beak, one would've seen a sort of cocky smile, saying that you can't do it can you. Staring directly at the small mouse, he waited for her to grab the message. And it seemed, after a moment, that indeed, she had understood what the Cuccoo was inferring. Good! That meant that he would get to see a jump from a mouse; ever curious about the things in the world, Melvin was perhaps a weird cuccoo.
But he had never thought of himself as weird, of course. Even in the chicken pen, with all the other cuccoos, where they were just as normal as could be. Softly, he began to coo, counting down the moments. It seemed like the strange mouse was most appreciative in a way to this, as he then watched her scramble. She jumped, taking flight in the air; although, she had underestimated jumping that distance it seemed. The mouse veered, instead of landing near her plate? She crashed into the plate meant for the other stranger that Flora had brought in; of course, the chicken clucked in amused laughter, if such a thing was possible.
This however, grabbed Flora's attention; in a panic, she looked behind her, afraid that something bad had happened. But instead, Cadenza sat there, looking like she had done something wrong; a simple gaze told Flora that the mouse had jumped from the chair, instead of patiently waiting for Flora to come push it, like she wanted to today. The Kokiri then looked at her marvelous Cuccoo, the chicken bobbing in place with the clucks. The child sighed, her face looking slightly serious, but amused at the same time, as she wandered to the table. Placing Rath on it's edge, she just shook her head, and cleaned the food from under the table, much like a mother cleaning after the children that took playing too far.
''Cadenza, I'm not mad, but maybe you should wait before trying to preform acrobatics. Food doesn't like shows I think.'' she said softly, letting out a soft, gentle smile. Thankfully; she still had some left in the fridge. She hadn't used all the portions after all, and well, Flora had liked to make sure that Atoli had a lot of food at her disposal, in case, the Kokiri was too tired. Luckily for her, the leaf plates were easy to fix if dropped, as she put the wasted food in a basket, to bury in the garden later. ''It's honestly fine Cadenza; and Melvin, you shouldn't tease her like that! Don't give me that look mister, I know you had something to do with it.'' the Forest child had continued, her voice slightly scolding the Cuccoo.
Turning to the fairy, she smiled once more. ''If you want to be big again, Rath, go ahead; I'll just make your plate again whilst you do that!'' she said. And then she busied herself to readying the plate, humming more notes, making sure to put proper care and love into the plate. After all, Flora wanted to treat Rath! And make him feel better if possible. After all, she had figured he had been pretty sad about something.. and she wanted to cheer him up, because she hated to see him sad. So if she could find a way to cheer him up.. that would be nice!

Contrary to her expectations, Flora does not seem to be angry, or be annoyed with Cadenza’s disgraceful behavior.
In fact she only lets out a sigh and, after placing the unhappy fairy on the table, shakes her head and gently started to clean the mess under the table.
“A-ah...Please allow me to help you.”
Cadenza hurries down the edge of the table, brushing past the fairy, and quickly claws her way down to the scraps of food under the table. She intends to bite some of them and places them near Flora to make it easier to be cleaned, all the time chattering incessantly about her unforgivable actions and many reasons how she ended up in that situation, each one weaker than the last.
But all of her words are actually filled with “Please forgive me”.
''Cadenza, I'm not mad, but maybe you should wait before trying to preform acrobatics. Food doesn't like shows I think.”
Putting down the last scrap of food she could reach, Cadenza bows her head and shifts her gaze downward, afraid of meeting Flora’s gentle gaze.
An improper behavior for a guest like her should be enough to make anyone mad, especially the house owner. But here is the small Kokiri girl, politely rebuking her apologies and showing no disdain at all. “You are right, Flora Lasola. My apologies. I would be more careful in the next time.”
Her voice is low, low and unsure. She lifts her head a little as the Kokiri girl starts to stand. “Once again, please forgive my behavior”
For Cadenza, the Kokiri who is putting the wasted food in the basket seems to dismiss her apologies again.
''It's honestly fine Cadenza; and Melvin, you shouldn't tease her like that! Don't give me that look mister, I know you had something to do with it.''
Cadenza steals an upward glance at Melvin, who is sitting on his chair looking satisfied with himself. How could the Cuccoo has something to do with this? In her own point of view, it was purely Cadenza’s fault.
But for now she would let it past. Mumbling “thank you” once again, she climbs back to the table, this time using the table’s own feet rather than her chairs. As she climbs, she thinks that she feels a gaze at her back, watching her behavior, but she pays no heed to it.
It is to be expected for such a disgraceful guest.
With her mind full of her own thought, she faces her own plate full of berries again, feeling miserable of herself. She does not even bother to greet the other guests around her.
But she does silently take notice of the note Flora is humming. She would try asking her about it later.
