Ulrich ran home as quick as he could. The path to his house imprinted in his memory so deeply that he could never forget. He rushed past the front gate and flung open the front door. He ran through the house haphazardly avoiding furniture that never moved.
"Ma! Pa! I'm home for just a little bit! I gotta find something!"
Ulrich ran into his room and rummaged through his belongings. His old clothes, trinkets from the past, little things he and Rune had picked up through their youth. Still no matter how deep he dug he couldn't find that old pearl. He had a vague idea of where he left.
His concern grew worse as he slowly realized that his parents weren't looking around for him. He had just burst into their home after a few months of being gone in a sudden and most likely violently rumored event. He wandered around the house looking around for his mother and father, but couldn't find either of them.
He stopped in the kitchen where he found a piece of paper on the counter. He picked it up and a stunned expression painted his face as he realized the letter was addressed to him.
Dear Son,
This is your old man. Your Ma and I are out for a few days. We had a feeling that you would be coming back here soon so we got something special prepared for you. We know how much you and Rune had wanted to adventure about. I think this is a great way to spend your youth.
We put some money aside for you son. We knew you might be needing a little when we saw that little boat you were heading out on. We managed to barter with Ole Rupert to bring back some of the shipwright skills out of retirement. It cost us Big Madam, but it's well worth it. Go check the docks. The big guys working down there should be expecting you.
Love, Ma & Pa
PS: Check the cabinet near Ma's chair
Ulrich placed the letter down on the counter. He wrote back a short message for his parents before heading into the next room. He scoured the room for the specific cabinet until he opened on small door and was stunned by the sight within.
His pearl sat on a small red pillow. It was glistening as if he had been freshly polished and gave off a soft green light. He picked it up and hugged it against his chest. A sense of childhood calm coming over him.
He rushed out of the front door, closing it behind him, and made a beeline to the docks. He passed Rune on the dinghy and looked around for one of the big fellows who worked the docks. When he sighted one the guy beamed at him. He pointed to the big unusual boat in the docks and said it was his. Ulrich could hardly believe that his parents had managed to commission something as nice as this.
He ran back toward the dinghy with Rune in it when a large shadow covered him. He turned only to see a large mass of red nearly slam into him. He sat on the ground, the pearl in his lap and Pabu sitting in front of him with his hairs on end. Ulrich looked up at the massive beast that stood before him.
The creature had to large wings that looked almost like furry, feathery arms. Its body was covered in black and red feathers. A plume of gray fur fluffed around its neck and hung behind it like a silky scarf. Its black and green eyes looked down on him.
Ulrich recognized the bird as one of the many odd sights he had seen in Deftacai's fortress. When Deftacai would toss him into the ocean to force him to bulk up this bird would get him so he wouldn't drown or escape.
Ulrich rose to his feet, "Pabu, it's okay. Are you lost without Deftacai or anyone else at that fortress? Is that why you followed me around?"
The bird looked at him and then off toward the horizon like it was trying to be deep or something.
"I'll take that as a yes! You're welcome to stay with me on this adventure then!"
The bird gave him a passing glance before flapping its massive wings and landing on the deck of his new ship. Ulrich walked over to Rune with a nervous smile.
"Good news Rune! I found my pearl! My parents bought us a new boat with much more room! The bad news, there's that massive bird that wants to come with us now.." he finished with a nervous laugh.

The crashing waves. The salty breeze. The sun beaming down mercilessly on the high seas. The feeling of tethering the small boat to the dock couldn't have felt better. The seafaring adventure was guided by the helpful lights of the moon and stars. It was now mid-morning on Outset Island where they planned on finishing.
Ulrich leaped out of the boat with Pabu, his trusty redish brown ferret, sitting on his shoulders. He turned back toward the boat to see if Rune was excited to be home for a bit as he was.
"Alright! Like you said we don't have a lot of time so I'll hurry and grab the pearl. Do you have anything you need to take care of as well?"
Ulrich beamed a smile he hadn't had in many weeks. He hoped that Rune would be able to see his improved outlook. He was finally getting the chance to adventure with his best friend. They had to leave Bosco behind so that their companions wouldn't worry. Ulrich knew Rune didn't mind at all. She wasn't a fan of Bosco.
Ulrich looked around the docks at the many fishing vessels and boats that frequented their island. There was one larger ship that was unusual, but it didn't appear to have a crew. He paid it no mind though.
As Ulrich turned to walk to his house Pabu pulled on his shirt. He looked at his furry companion with confusion as he raised a small paw to the sky. Ulrich could easily see what he was pointing out. A dark silhouette, difficult to make out due to the sun. It had been following them the entire trip.
"I see it Pabu. I hope it's not more trouble. We have a mission though so we can't let it bother us!" Ulrich cheered, raising an arm with Pabu mimicking him.

Ulrich let out a dry chuckle, "You think so too. Brave without the recklessness."
He finally let her go. He looked out over the ocean one more time and let out a lengthy sigh. He walked around the bench and dropped down next to Rune. His back leaning up against her.
"Okay so here's dealy! I had a dream and it was all sorts of crazy. You know those Goddesses they talk about in the legends. Apparently they're real. Who knew right? She came to me in a dream and said that I was a Sage of some kind. Courage specifically! You remember that green pearl I fancied when we were younger? It's some kind of artifact. Kid's toys now, really? I gotta take it to Eastern Triangle Island and it'll fulfill one step of a crazy prophecy to prevent the end of days!"
Ulrich pushed away from Rune and laid down on his back. He looked up at her from his upside-down perspective.
"Now don't think you're not included on this fun. You play a greater role in this. The gathering of these pearls, two more, one for each Goddess, is part of a bigger plan for you and maybe some others. She didn't say. A tower will pop up somewhere and you gotta go there."
He gave her a coy smile.
"Farore, that Goddess of Courage, tried telling me that you would really need me. That you weren't strong or something. Needless I told her off! 'What do you mean Rune isn't that strong? Let me tell you how strong she is!" She had to correct herself of course. She told me to that I needed to love you. Obviously I told her when did I ever appear to stop because that's a silly notion."
He sat back up and faced her.
"With this end of days coming at us and you becoming a legendary hero, there's no more time to just let this go unsaid. I love you Rune. Always have, even if I didn't realize it yet. You know you complete me. Without you I would probably be a boring pig farmer back home. Yet here we are traveling the Great Sea and being thrown into legends and stuff. You complete me. So when you become a great hero and people praise you don't forget about me okay? And when I'm off doing sagely things like talking to children about not giving up on their dreams I won't ever forget about you.
He gave her a thumbs up and a dorky smile.
"So when you're in trouble you can rely on me to help out. Even if I haven't been reliable before, I'm a sage now so it's gotta account for something! Also if you don't believe me that's okay because I feel really crazy believing this dream too. Maybe I'm just crazy and never knew it~"

Ulrich listened quietly while a small playful smile spread across his lips.
“The great and might Rune Darius needs me? Why that’s amazing~ Don’t tell me you’re going soft!” He spoke in a satirical macho tone. His façade faded quickly though. “Never leave your side, huh? What good do I do? I can cook and stuff, but you’re clearly far more capable than I am. Than I’ll ever be.”
He had a sad smile on his face while he looked at her. He lifted himself from the back of the bench. He walked behind Rune and dropped down on her. His arms wrapped around her shoulders. His head pressed against hers.
“I never want to be away from you again. I felt so helpless. I was so scared.” His hands gripped her shoulders harder. “I never want to be in that situation ever again. I can’t keep it from happening. I lack the strength and the bravery. So I’ll have to be with the strongest, bravest, most awesome person I know.”
He stooped there hugging Rune for what felt like an eternity, refusing to let go. “You really were all I could think about back there. You are my courage.”
His eyes widened. “Courage?”
He thought to himself for a few moments. “Some Sage of Courage that makes me…” He off-handedly mentions.

“FWAAAH!”
Ulrich roused from his slumber, throwing the blanket covering him aside. He panted lightly for a few moments before slumping back down into the bed. The dream he had… it was a dream right? Goddess, Sage, Courage. It was all too crazy to take in. He rolled onto his side and looked off at the wall that seemed ever so distant now. Not only was he connected to this game of fate, but Rune was as well now. How could this happen right after what they had been through? They hadn’t even had the chance to make up after everything.
He slowly closed his eyes and laid there for what felt like hours. The quiet room only yielded silence. The answers wouldn’t just come to him if he waited. It wasn’t like it was a mystery either. He knew what he had to do, but was it the right thing? He sighed and covered his head with the pillow, hoping to drown out these thoughts.
A creak outside his door caused his ears to perk up. He laid there silently awaiting his door to open or some other sound. He sat in suspense like this for several seconds before scolding himself for being so paranoid. His experiences with Deftacai left a bad mark on his psyche.
He slowly rose from his bed and made his way to the door. He thought he could hear the creaking sound of steps getting further away. He slowly opened his door and stuck his head out to see who it was. He looked to the right to see no one. His glance to the left showed a head of pink hair just before rounding the corner.
He looked down at his pajamas before grunting to himself. He shut the door behind him and walked after her. It took a bit of intuition to follow her tracks, but he could make out her outline and pink hair on a bench overlooking the ocean. It brought a sense of nostalgia. He could remember some of his adventures on the island with Rune. The way they would look out over the ocean from the forest cliffs.
He walked up behind her and leaned against the back of the bench next to Rune. A labored sigh escaped his lips as he looked out over the ocean.
“Everything has been pretty difficult lately hasn’t it.”
Ulrich looked over to Rune with a sad smile.
“You had to go all across the Great Sea to come save me. I can’t imagine what kind of challenges you had to complete to make up for me. I’m sorry to you had to go through so much.”
He looked down at the bench in front of him.
“But when I was sitting in that decrepit castle… All I could think about was you. How I wanted nothing more than for you to come save me. Thank you Rune, thank you so much.”

HERES TO WHAT MAKES EVERYDAY WORTH IT
"Brrrr, why is it so cold here? I was told the temperatures were nice in Termina this time of year..."
Ulrich hiked through the snow-covered swamp. He glanced around at all of the winter-decorated landmarks he was told to find. The folks in Clocktown did their best to give him detailed directions to the Deku's palace. They even told him some of the weird weather that was going on that might get in the way. Still, none of the directions made sense when covered in a foot of snow or three inches of ice.
He wandered through the winter wonderland oblivious to where anything was. It wasn't until he heard the sounds of yelling that he had an idea of where to go. He jogged through the thick snow until he found two others sitting in the snow. One guy and one girl. The guy looked a little injured while the girl was poking the water. How odd...
He approached the two and looked them over. He then looked up at the ice-covered swamp. He could see a large hole in the ice. Large enough for the guy to fall into. He appeared to be damp though he could have gotten that from the snow.
Ulrich adjusted his scarf as he looked around. "Thin ice is dangerous! Why isn't there a sign up that warns people about that? It's like their asking for someone to get hurt!"

HERES TO WHAT MAKES EVERYDAY WORTH IT
In his time here, Ulrich had become rather lethargic. He still ate and wandered around his cage occasionally, but otherwise he would quietly sit with his back against one of the walls or just lay on the floor. Sure Deftacai would come around and bother him from time to time, but it wasn't worth the trouble to get worked up. He didn't have anything to look forward to anymore. Each day was the same monotonous routine. The food was good at least.
Ulrich sat in silence in the cage. His mind wandering off to the careful procedures one had to perform to tend to pigs. The process one uses to take care of these animals was actually quite detailed. Various elements of their diet and environment has to be carefully monitored. If something gets out of control it could injure one of the pigs or end up with the lot of them becoming diseased.
Ulrich was pulled from this boring train of thought by Lilith, the housekeeper here. He had gotten to know her somewhat in his time here and enjoyed her company more than Deftacai's. He watched with curious interest as she unlocked the cage and opened the door. In his time here Lilith hadn't opened the cage once, Deftacai had but Ulrich didn't dare try to escape with Deftacai right in front of him. He looked down at the clothes she had handed him. They looked like a fresh outfit from his usual wardrobe.
"Hurry Mr. Thistle, I believe it's time for you leave." Ulrich looked up at her, blatantly confused as to what the situation was. "Your friend that you talked about is here with a group of people, and I think she's going to be here soon, so please get ready. I packed you some helpful things for leaving, and hope it's enough."
His eyes opened wide with an excitement he hadn't felt in forever. He immediately knew who she was talking about.
"Rune's here?! Really?! How did she figure out this was where I was?"
His questions kept rambling on as he looked through the pack she handed him. He glanced at the items held within, but it wasn't what he wanted to know about. His gaze wandered up to the cage. The sound of the door shutting catching his attention.
"I'm going to keep the door closed but unlocked, and if Defticai comes to soon act like you're still locked up and I'll get him out of here." He looked down at his rags. He quickly disrobed and put on his new clothes. They fit wonderfully! Ulrich couldn't keep himself from smiling.
"Thanks for staying with us Mr. Thistle." He met her gaze and looked off toward another wall, a small smirk on his face. "I can't say it was enjoyable by any stretch of the word, but you made it bearable. Thank you for your hospitality Ms. Lilith."
He gave her a small bow before rushing toward the door and looking around the room. "Where do we need to go to meet Rune? The sooner the better to me."

HERES TO WHAT MAKES EVERYDAY WORTH IT
Quiet torment. Ulrich could describe the sensation no better than torture. No sounds, no movement. Just a gloomy dark room and a wooden cage to hold him in. His captor didn't say much beyond his odd ranting as he threw him in here. Not a word on what he wanted with him, why he had kidnapped him, or what was going to happen. He sat with his back against the wall opposite of the door. His head buried in his arms that lay on his knees. His mind replayed the events of what happened over and over, like an old news reel. Each time the vision ended he was given a few moments of peace, flickering shades of color, before he relived it again.
He couldn't get it out of his head. Rune's scared expression, her cries for him.
His hands clenched at his flesh and remaining clothes.
"That bastard."
His body jerked at the sound of someone nearby. He didn't move or look up as he heard the rustling and movement of someone approaching the cage. He didn't realize he was breathing while he focused on the sounds.
"Mr. Thistle!" the maid spoke in a sing-song tone, "Here's your dinner!"
He lifted his head and looked at the maid. His expression was a grim one. His eyes were alight with spite. He dipped his head back into his arms and sighed deeply. He knew she was hardly involved in most of this. The young girl was probably the only thing that he could remotely like about this place. He slowly rose to his feet and stumbled over to the opening where he could grab the tray. After securing his meal, he wandered back to the center of the room where he could eat it without being in range to be touched.
He looked down at his meal with dread. He didn't want to eat right now, but not eating wouldn't help anything. Acting like that would just bring his captor back to the cage. He reluctantly began eating the food. The look on his face showed his surprise. It was really good. Not like he expected to be given in a prison like environment. He was still slow to eat it, but it would be another one of those things that made being here just a little better.
"What do you think Mr. Thistle? Please be honest! I would like to cook you better meals in the future."
He idled his fork against the steak and just poked at it for a while. The words weren't coming to him.
"The steak is pretty tasty. I prefer it a little less tough so if you could cook it a little less that'd be fine. The mashed potatoes would be phenomenal if they had a little bit of garlic and some of the skin left in it. Maybe boil the peas a little longer to make them a little mushier. If you add some spices in with it they'll take the flavor too."
He looked up at her and then lowered his gaze, "But it's pretty good..." He continued working through his dinner. "Could I get a change of clothes too?"

HERES TO WHAT MAKES EVERYDAY WORTH IT
He took a step back. He couldn't keep himself from smiling. It was all so exciting. He had been fighting it every day until now. It was a long walk to get over his fear of getting shipwrecked. Rune stood there by him the entire time. Sure she was pushing him along for her adventurous plans, but he actually wanted to join it along her. He laughed to himself. What better time to tell her than now?
"RUN-"
"What?" His arm crumpled to his side. It was like he was hit by one of those cows charging at him. His ears were pained by the roar of the wind. He could feel his clothes rip apart as the wind tore at his flesh. His vision blurred as he watched the front of Rune's house slip to the right. He fell into the dirt, scrapping him even more.
Pain. So much pain. Where did this come from? What hit him? Ulrich couldn't answer any of these. He tried to pick himself up. He tried to look around or run away. It took every bit of effort he had to just breath. His eyes slowly glanced skyward as he questioned why this day could go so wrong.
"Guh!"
Ulrich tried to cry out as the breath was squeezed out of him. He felt like Bosco had wrapped him in a bear hug. His lungs burned. His bones hurt. He could hardly breath. His eyes felt heavy as he desperately clung to consciousness. He felt his center of gravity flip upside down. His senses were blaring with confusion and pain.
He could hardly hear the words of some man. It sounded like that stranger that had yelled at him. Could he be the one who hit him? Ulrich tried to wrack his mind, but pain flooded his every thought and made it difficult to think. His eyes slowly drifted upward to see Rune. Her sword was trained on him. More appropriately on the man who was holding him.
There was so much he wanted to say. He put whatever energy together that he could. He wanted to say he didn't appreciate the way everyone was treating him. He didn't like being treated like a sack of grain or meat. He wanted to tell her that he was happy to go on adventures. He wanted to tell how much fun he's had all these years. He would do so much more if he had the time.
"Rune..."
He desperately tried to gather his breath. All he wanted to ask was her to help him so he could make up for all the things he didn't say.

HERES TO WHAT MAKES EVERYDAY WORTH IT
"Keep it up the good work Bosco! I'll bring you back that tricorn hat!"
The youth ran from the small docks of Outset Island nearby their small village. His bear, Bosco, was the newly appointed captain of his ship. He couldn't captain the ship properly without a hat worthy of a captain. The boat was just barely large enough to fit the two of them, but maybe they would be able to take Bosco with them if he swam some.
The red and brown ferret was resting on his shoulders. There was more than enough room for Pabu in the boat given he hardly weighed as much as their clothes. The ferret happily chattered while riding Ulrich's shoulders. Ulrich lifted a hand and gave Pabu a pet before focusing on making his way to Rune's.
Ulrich couldn't keep himself from feeling like he was brimming with energy. Rune had decided that today was the day they were going to test out their dinghy. There was a small island on the horizon that they were planning on sailing to. He had spent as many rupees as he could from working with his pops. The dinghy was fifty rupees which was over three months payment. He had been irritated at first, but now the call of adventure was getting to him.
Maybe there was something more beyond the island.
"Oof"
Ulrich stumbled as he bumped into someone he was passing by. The man was shorter than him, but appeared better built than him. He had blond hair like him, but his eyes were a bright gold. His clothing suggested he wasn't from the island or at least new here. Ulrich couldn't recall seeing him before. He gave him a polite nod as he passed by.
"Sorry about that mister!"
Ulrich paid the stranger no more mind as he jogged around the corner to Rune's house. She should be almost finished getting ready already. He knocked on the door loudly, in case she was in the dojo. He took a moment to look over the front of her house. He had come here every day for who knows how long. Soon he wouldn't be coming here everyday. It was almost sad, but he couldn't deny the excitement of adventure. It would still be here when he got back anyway.
"Hey Rune! The dinghy's almost ready! Oh, and we need to get a hat for Bosco too!"
