"Undependable just like his father." That's what the villagers said about him. His father was notorious around the village for not being able to keep his pigs in their pens. They always grumbled that the exercise would make their meat inferior. Ulrich jumped in to help his father when he got old enough, but he had inherited his father's bad luck with pigs. The pigs were just too fast and clever.
Ulrich got along well enough with the other kids in the village. They used to make fun of him about his pigs, but they got bored of it when he didn't get upset. They eventually invited him to go on their little quests with them. They would leave him behind occasionally. He rarely complained about it. He was just happy to get invited along unlike a girl in the village who was known for being rude and violent. Rune would be rude and insult just about everyone who she ran into. Ulrich was no exception. She was the only one to get under his skin with her remarks.
This brought some discontent when the other kids invited her along to their trip to the forest on the mountain above the village. They went too deep in the woods and attracted a monster. Rune defended the other kids while they ran back to the village, but the rope bridge broke before Ulrich could get across. The experience turned out to be a great one. They became the best of friends and virtually inseparable afterward. Rune's personality was a good fit for his own, especially for his hesitance. While Ulrich will say she causes nothing but headaches, he wouldn't give her up for the world.
